Birley Medical Centre 8-week Weight Management Programme
Each session lasts for 1.5 hours, which will allow time for discussion and individual questions at the end.
Week 1 – Aims/Introductions

- Explain ethos of Bloom

- Introduce Bloom '5 principles' of eating
- Introduce idea of increased activity
- Introduce idea wearing what suits us
- Homework – feelings/thoughts journal – identify triggers
Week 2 – Eating Habits/Nutrition
- Look at journals and identify triggers

- Cooking from scratch

- Group Hypnotherapy – Weight control/Confidence

Week 3 – Motivation/Exercise/Motivation

- Relaxation techniques
- Effects of food & exercise on body
- Exploring amounts of energy in different foods
- Getting motivated & keeping motivated

Week 4 – Hypnotherapy techniques
- Group Hypnotherapy – Weight Control

Week 5 – Achieving Goals/NLP Techniques
- NLP Techniques - particularly Anchor
- Re-framing techniques & Language

Week 6 – Image/Style
- Identifying body shapes

Week 7 – Confidence building

Week 8 – Re-cap/Self-coaching

This programme addresses the best practice guidelines outlined in paragraph 1.1.7.1 in the NICE guidance ‘Obesity, guidance on the prevention identification, assessment and management of overweight and obesity in adults and children’ (Clinical guideline 43 December 2006)
Weight management programmes should follow these principles
- Help people assess their weight and decide on realistic targets
- Maximum weekly weight loss of 0.5-1kg
- Focus on long term life style change rather than short term quick fixes
- Be multicomponent address both diet and activity, and offer a variety of approaches
- Use a balanced, healthy eating approach
- Recommend regular physical activity
- Include behaviour changes
- Recommend or provide ongoing support
Included in the 8-week programme, will be journals*, hypnotherapy CD*, on line forum as well as the encouragement for group members to actively support each other outside of the weekly meetings.
*these will incur minimal but extra costs
The privately run programme includes two individual telephone coaching sessions.
The GP practice may want to utilise health care workers to monitor weight and BP, and also for continued support once the programme has been completed.
